Sizing Your System

Start with an honest load analysis. List every appliance, its wattage, and daily hours of use. Common loads: LED lighting (5W × 4hrs = 20 Wh), efficient refrigerator (60W average = 1,440 Wh/day), laptop (45W × 5hrs = 225 Wh), well pump (500W × 1hr = 500 Wh). Sum to get daily watt-hours. A comfortable off-grid home typically uses 2,000–5,000 Wh/day. Divide by your location's peak sun hours (pvwatts.nrel.gov) then add 25% for real-world losses.

TipReducing your loads is always more cost-effective than adding more solar. An efficient chest freezer drawing 1 kWh/day vs a standard upright drawing 2.5 kWh/day saves $1,500+ in battery and panel costs.

Battery Bank Selection

Lead-acid (flooded or AGM): lower upfront cost ($150–300/usable kWh), limited to 50% depth of discharge, 500–1,000 cycles, heavy. LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate): higher upfront ($700–1,000/usable kWh), 80–100% depth of discharge, 2,000–4,000 cycles, zero maintenance, much lighter. Size your bank for 3 days of autonomy: 4,000 Wh/day × 3 days = 12,000 Wh usable, ÷ 0.9 (efficiency) = 13,333 Wh nominal.

ImportantNever mix old and new batteries in a bank, or different brands/chemistries. A weak cell drags down the entire bank and dramatically shortens the life of all batteries.

MPPT Charge Controllers

MPPT controllers are the only appropriate choice for serious systems — they extract 10–30% more power than PWM controllers by continuously finding the panel array's optimal voltage. Victron SmartSolar controllers are the industry gold standard: the SmartSolar 100/30 handles up to 400W at 12V. Their Bluetooth monitoring integrates with the VictronConnect app for real-time performance data. Budget $100–350 for a quality MPPT controller depending on array size.

Inverters & Wiring

Pure sine wave inverters are required for sensitive electronics, motors, and most modern appliances. An inverter/charger combo (Victron MultiPlus, Magnum, or OutBack) adds generator charging through the same unit — essential for a complete system. Size your inverter to your largest simultaneous AC load plus 20%. Install a main fuse or circuit breaker within 18" of every battery bank. A Battery Management System (BMS) is standard in LiFePO4 batteries and protects against overcharge and short circuit.

Backup & Hybrid Strategies

The most resilient off-grid systems combine solar with at least one backup source. Generator charging: a 3,000–6,000W propane generator connected through your inverter/charger charges batteries; run 1–3 hours on deep cloudy periods. Wind turbine: complements solar well — produces at night and during overcast weather. Microhydro: if you have a year-round stream with 20+ feet of vertical drop and 1+ GPM of flow, a Pelton wheel produces continuous 24/7 power at the lowest cost per kWh of any renewable source.
